Our school provides opportunities for students, staff and parents to know and celebrate their Catholic faith. This is done through the religious life of our school. Members of our community experience a rich liturgical and prayer life, celebration of the Sacraments, faith formation, social outreach activities, and opportunities to share faith with each other and with youth from other schools in the Archdiocese.
The Religious Education program at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School Waterloo is based on the curriculum developed by Sydney Catholic Schools. Religious Education is not taught in isolation as it is part of everyday life and is incorporated in all key learning areas. Children are encouraged to reflect on the message of Jesus and to embrace this in their daily lives. Our children are encouraged to develop their faith practice as they learn to:
- reflect on Sacred Scripture
- talk with God through prayer
- participate in liturgy
- explore the meaning of the symbols and rituals of our faith
- respond to gifts and blessings in their lives
- participate in outreach programs.
Through the Family and Faith program, parents – as the first educators of their children – are invited into a deeper and more intimate relationship with the person of Jesus Christ.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School Waterloo acknowledges our families as the first educators of their children. Our school’s Family Educator, provides opportunities and assistance for our families to grow their faith through a variety of initiatives and and the faith events throughout the year.
Staff are encouraged to nurture their own faith and understanding through opportunities such as further study in Religious Education and Theology, prayer and reflection, retreats and pilgrimages and other faith formation activities.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School Waterloo encourages staff to nurture their faith and reflect on how the teachings of the Gospel are relevant to their own lives. Staff are given opportunities to gather and lead prayer during staff prayer weekly. Staff strive to be a model of Christ in their daily interactions with every community member and visitor to our school.
Our Catholic school is part of the Catholic Church. We work in partnership with our local parish and priests in order to enrich the spiritual life of the students, staff and families of our school, especially through the celebration of the Sacraments.
The religious life of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School Waterloo is nourished by its close relationship with Fr Paul Smithers and the Catholic Community of City South (Waterloo, Redfern and Rosebery).
Both school and parish offer many opportunities for people, especially our children, to think about God and the place of faith in their lives, and to meet God in word and sacrament. The school conducts a comprehensive Religious Education unit on each sacrament and coordinates sacramental retreat days.
Central to the religious life of the school is the person of Jesus Christ who came among us ‘as one who serves’ (Luke 22.27). Our Catholic school is committed to reaching out to help those in need, through charitable outreach initiatives. All outreach activities connect to the person of Jesus Christ and to the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Drawing on the Catholic Social Teaching of the Church, we have a deep commitment to supporting a range of charitable organisations, families and individuals in need.
At Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School Waterloo, we believe every child can make a positive difference by participating in outreach initiatives. In the spirit of education, generosity and outreach, our students are involved in the Pope Francis Award, Caritas and Mini Vinnies.
